Fescue grass vs. Zoysia grass
When it comes to your lawn you probably have noticed there are several options. Two of the most popular options are fescue and zoysia grass. Below we will examine each type to help you decide which is best for you:
Fescue
Fescue grass typically has a medium to coarse texture however, some fescues such as fineleaf red fescue will have a fine texture. Fescue grass prefers a mowing height of about 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 inches and are cool season grasses. This means that they stay green year round in climates with both mild winters and summers and may go dormant in hot summer weather as fescue likes the shade and cold weather. If you need a grass variety to plant in partial shade such as beneath a tree, fescue is the better choice of grass. Fescue grass is typically established from seed and some fescues such as red fescue require such little maintenance that they may not even need mowing!
Zoysia
Zoysia grass has a medium to fine texture and a dense growth pattern. Zoysia prefers a shorter mowing height of 3/4 to 2 inches. It is a warm season grass which grows during summer and goes dormant during cool temperatures. It stays the greenest year round in areas with mild winters and temporarily turns brown in cool winter temperatures. Zoysia grass tolerates more wear and drought conditions than fescue making zoysia a better choice for high traffic areas. Zoysia grass is usually started from either sprigs, plugs, or sod because its seeds are of poor quality. Zoysia grass does requires more maintenance than fescues and can be difficult to mow evenly. It also develops more thatch than fescue and is more likely to have problems with nematodes in the soil.
